The Layoffs Are Still AI. The Press Releases Aren’t.

AI was the top cited reason for US job cuts for a fifth consecutive month in July, accounting for roughly 113,000 announced cuts this year. Etsy, Patreon, and Microsoft now insist their reductions were not driven by AI, a retreat from the candor of Klarna and Salesforce’s Marc Benioff. Public sentiment explains the shift: 61% of US adults expect AI to reduce economic opportunity and only 21% expect it to grow.

Norm's Take

Narrative inconsistency is now a talent and brand liability. Announce the reskilling path before the cut, never pair a layoff with an AI ROI boast, and use the same story for employees, investors, and regulators, because all three audiences now compare notes.
