New BCG research finds executive teams and boards are aligned in principle on AI’s strategic importance but diverge in practice: 60 percent of CEOs say their boards are too impatient with the pace of transformation, while 35 percent believe their boards overestimate what AI can actually replace. Only 28 percent of organizations report the CEO takes direct responsibility for AI governance, and just 17 percent say the board does.

A governance vacuum at the top is now the binding constraint on AI scale-up, not technology. Executives who want board support for aggressive AI bets need to close the ownership gap first, formally assigning AI governance to a named executive and a standing board committee, or risk having every initiative re-litigated at each board cycle.
